can divorced parents each carry insurance for their child?
i live in florida. my ex and i have joint custody of our son. can both his father and i carry our own separate insurance for our son. basically, can he be covered under 2 health insurance plans, one with each parent?
Yes you can both carry insurance on your son and that is a good idea because it should reduce your out of pocket expenses to almost $0 however it is not like you say that one is in effect when they are with one parent and the other when they are with the other. Insurance does not work like that.
The way it would be is one would be primary the other secondary. Who’s is primary is depending on two thing 1 how the policies are worded. the other is the parents birth date (you don’t get to determine which is primary or secondary the insurance companies do). But like I said it usually goes by whoever’s birth date falls first in the calendar year (not including year born) is primary. example if one parents birthday is 2/1/73 and the others 5/7/69 the parent who was born in February even though born later is the primary insurance. The other parents insurance is secondary and is billed for any costs including deductible, co pay, co insurance and non covered items that the primary does not pay. This also includes prescription, pharmacies can bill both insurances. One covers perscription the other covers any perscription co pay.
It works this way no matter which parent the child is with. If you try to do it separately like that you will only get rejected claims and possibly cancellation of insurance policies because you have to disclose any other policies covering the insured.
