Where do Chain Letter style texts originate from?
I just got a text from an unknown number warning me about Romanian child abductors in ASDA! I’m aware this is an urban myth and absolute BS but do some people take them seriously? These texts have the potential to be dangerous, I can imagine vigilantes getting all whipped up about this. Where do these texts come from? I’ve had loads of this kind of stuff recently, anything from health alerts to stupid stuff ‘you are beautiful, forward this text to ten more beautiful women and you will receive your fortune’ etc. What is the point at all?
I wouldn’t mind but I am ultra precious about my mobile number, where do they get it from?
They originated long before the internet with real mail scams.
Here is a quote from a good website on the origins of these scams.
“According to one book by a postal inspector, chain letters come in cycles. In August, 1969, there were only 97 letters under investigation. In January, 1970, there were 559! These cycles seem to repeat “every few years”.”
The history of this nonsense is huge! I would presume this could have happened as long ago as the dawn of man!!
