Are vaccines really safe? Are there any common side effects?
This is basically just for all vaccines (chicken pox, booster, measles, polio… etc)
When I was little, around 4-5, I got the chicken pox shot and the next day I had developed a slight case of the chicken pox. It wasn’t very serious or life threatening just very uncomfortable with the usual red spot rashes. I’m not sure if the shot gave me the disease or if I had already contracted it before I got the shot because I know one of the kids I used to play with had the chicken pox at the time.
I was just wondering about the safety of vaccines, since that happened to me when I was younger.
What’s in them? Is there a chance my child will get the disease from the shot? Are they better off just getting it?
We don’t see the diseases that are addressed by the common childhood vaccines much anymore. So we don’t actually know the dangers posed by those diseases personally. But they are serious and have taken many children “home to heaven” in the past centuries.
Vaccines do pose slight risks for those being immunized. Sometimes that means that a child may have some symptoms caused by her own body’s immune system. This “immune flare” means that the child is in the process of being protected. Her body is learning what the dangerous pathogen looks like and is preparing a defense. That should be seen as very welcome.
There are a few children who get very ill from vaccines every year. This will happen. For the parents of these children, they feel really bad because they will think that the reaction is something that they could have avoided. They are not thinking about the other diseases that their child could have caught and the severity. I don’t feel that I should talk trash about these poor parents. But they may not see the larger picture.
If you live in a place where 95% of the children are vaccinated and yours are not, the likelihood of your child contracting the diseases involved are reduced dramatically because other children cannot easily host the diseases. So some parents opt out. If more did, the result could become very serious. So the game plan would be to talk everyone else into doing it, but not your own kids. I am old now. No longer raising kids. So I don’t have a dog in the fight now. But I can say that we have a safer environment for kids because of vaccination, but a few may suffer. Very good place to consider what you really believe. The libertarian might say, “Get your hands off my kids.” The scandinavian like me might say,”Let’s protect all our kids, even with a small risk to mine.”
Take your pick. It is still a free country. (Well, sort of.)
Thimerosal, a preservative used in a large percentage of the flu vaccines given by injection, does contain some mercury as part of another molecule. But it is not anti-freeze. Ethyl and Methyl are two different prefixes in chemistry that mean different things. Methyl alcohol is the kind used to rub on your skin, Ethyl alcohol is my martini.
